The audience will discover:

• How people survive horrific experiences and find the strength to go on; the quality of “everyday courage”.
• How the opioid epidemic affects families; the devastation it has caused in Appalachia and now in the rest of the country
• How people face impending death – a good death, with family nearby, or a last road trip to the open expanses of the southwest.
• How a doctor needs to say a prayer before seeing challenging patients: “Give me patience to deal with difficult patients; give me wisdom; give me courage to speak honestly.”

The audience will discover: If you are a Yankee by birth and are seeking travel to a foreign land…come join me for an armchair tour of Kentucky and discover its oddities, as well as its strengths.

Small Town Doctoring: The challenges and rewards

The audience will discover what practice is like in a small town, especially in the South.

• Challenges: Some patients lack insurance; many lack education: others are dealing with chronic conditions like diabetes or emphysema. The challenges are real, requiring a steep learning curve on the part of the provider.
• Rewards: The privilege of getting to know your patients and their extended families. You can follow them over years, see how they are doing on the meds you prescribe or the interventions you recommend. You get to watch the kids grow up.
